Homeowners, did you know that you should drain your hot water heater once per year? Doing so will clear out built-up sediment and minerals that could affect its performance. Here are 7 easy steps to get it done today.
- Turn off the unit’s electricity (circuit breaker or fuse) or gas (turn knob to “pilot”).
- Turn off the cold-water valve and affix a hose to the drain valve.
- Run the hose into a floor drain, sump pump pit, or out into the yard.
- Open the drain valve, then the pressure relief valve to drain the tank. No pressure relief valve? Turn the hot water on at the nearest sink, then open the drain valve.
- Once the tank is empty open the cold-water valve again and let water run until clear.
- Close the drain and pressure relief valves, allow the tank to refill, and detach the hose.
- Turn your water heater back on and mark your calendar to do this again next year.
