Grand Lake o’ the Cherokees is situated in Northeast Oklahoma in the foothills of the Ozark Mountain Range. It is often simply called Grand Lake. With more than 60,000 surface acres and 1,300 miles of shoreline, Grand Lake O’ the Cherokees is one of the biggest family-friendly outdoor destinations in Oklahoma. It stretches across 15 towns and four counties. Talk about big lake living!
Big fun on the lake includes watercraft of all kinds, including pontoons, powerboats, sailboats, jet skis, kayaks, canoes, and more. There are no boat restrictions on this lake! Due to its predictable winds, it attracts sail boaters from across the country as well. Additionally there are many marinas and rental services located around the water. You can even visit Sail Grand Waterfront for an exciting parasailing ride over the lake.
Grand Lake houses a wide variety of sport and non-sport fishing. Bernice, a small town on Grand Lake, is known as the “Crappie Fish Capital of the World” and is an excellent spot for both skilled and beginner anglers. The lake consistently ranks among the top bass fishing lakes in the United States too.
There is plenty of fun to be had out of the water too. Monkey Island lies at the center of the lake, offering various recreational, shopping, and nightlife opportunities. Horseback riding, biking, and hiking are offered at Benard’s State Park and Monkey Island. Off-roading is another hit activity in the area. Hogan’s Offroad Park features rocky terrain, mud bogs, and more. Miniature golf, swimming pools, nature walks, and museums are all across Grand Lake for more recreational options. There are a number of shows in the area, and a sixty-seven-foot long, twin deck paddle wheel riverboat called the Cherokee Queen, which has been in operation since the 1940s.
Community-wide events happen almost every week here, including Duck Creek Fireworks, Rockin’ the Dock Concerts, Aquapalooza, and much more. Another annual event is the Grand Lake Bobber Drop, a community-wide event held by different Grand Lake business owners.
Grand Lake real estate is the second largest market in the state for lake homes and lake lots. It is one of only two major lakes in the state where residents can own lakefront property on the water’s edge. On average, there are around 260 lake homes for sale on Grand Lake, and around 150 lake lots and land parcels at any given time.
Grand Lake of the Cherokees is an excellent family-oriented lake destination with unbeatable dining, recreation, and boating opportunities. When you call this lake home, you will never want to leave!
